AFFOGATO – THE PERFECT FIVE MINUTE COFFEE DESSERT

AFFOGATO - THE PERFECT FIVE MINUTE COFFEE DESSERT

There’s this thing my family always does when we eat ice cream. We love a good scoop, be it summer or winter but most of the time, particularly in the winters, we’ll chase our scoop of ice cream with a glass of hot water. That way, you get to enjoy the fun of ice cream without hurting your throat – or so they like to believe. The jury is still out on whether that helps or not but it got me thinking of affogatos!

An affogato is an Italian dessert consisting of gelato and hot espresso. Simply pour the espresso into the gelato and enjoy it before it melts! It’s sort of an after dinner drink and dessert all rolled into one. The bitterness and heat of the espresso combined with the sweetness of the cold gelato is a match made in heaven. It’s also the quickest and easiest dessert to make that is bound to impress people.

What Ice Cream to Use For Affogato?

Now, traditionally, affogatos are made with vanilla gelato. However, you can use a really good high quality vanilla ice cream as well. Gelato is denser than ice cream; with more milk content and flavour but ice cream is just so much more accessible here in India! Since we’re only using three ingredients today it’s a good idea to spring for the best quality you can afford. You can also switch things up and use a flavoured ice cream like chocolate, hazelnut or salted caramel. If you’re a coffee fiend you could even use espresso ice cream!

EQUIPMENT

The Wonderchef Regalia 15 Bar Espresso Machine seemed like an indulgence to me at first. I love my coffee, sure, but enough to warrant an espresso machine? I didn’t think so. Boy, have I eaten my words since! From Espresso Martinis to Mocaccinos(LINK RECIPES), I’ve made such good use of the Regalia Espresso Machine that I don’t think I can ever give it up!

If you’re new to the espresso game then this is definitely the machine for you. It’s so easy to understand and operate. Wonderchef also goes a step further by providing these easy to follow instructional videos. In a few simple steps, you can make cafe-quality espressos right from the comfort of your home. However, It’s not just espressos; since the machine comes with a milk frother, you can make a host of other coffee shop classics. You can check out The Perfect Cup of Espresso (LINK RECIPE) to learn more about what makes a good espresso and how to make one using the Regalia 15 Bar Machine.

How to Serve an Affogato?

For a fun twist on our Affogato, we’re going to add a swig of Baileys to it! The Irish cream infusion really complements the coffee flavours and takes the affogato to the next level. You can serve your affogato in a coffee cup, ice cream bowl or a glass. Don’t worry if you don’t have the perfect serve ware because Wonderchef has you covered with their new Home and Living range. These Teramo Stoneware Cappuccino Mugs and the Amalfiee Absolute Lemongrass Mugs are perfect for this recipe. I also like to top my affogato with peanut brittle for a fun little Indian crunch! You can also use chocolate chips, slivered almonds, sprinkles or even brownie bits! Check out this amazing Air Fryer Brownie recipe made in the Wonderchef Prato Air Fryer! No matter your choice of toppings, you’ll definitely enjoy the delightful combination of ice cream and espresso!
